Dead Wake

This story was told very well and I loved the incredible cascade of details that allowed you to really get into the world when deep characterisation was not possible. It was intricate while remaining accessible. The luxury of the liner worked in stark contrast to the horror of its ultimate fate and the menacing nature of the sub came casting a foreboding shadow over everything in its path, making characters of the boats themselves rather than the people on them. Erik Larson is a fine writer and always manages to find compelling historical stories I was much more engrossed with the second half of the book containing details of the actual sinking and the apportioning of blame than the set up but that just speaks of the enormity of the event itself. Considering the death toll and the fact it was caused my mans own violence and it was only three years after the titanic I am surprised it is not a story more commonly told.

I received this from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review
